This collaborative project with the CSIR is aimed at designing a "toolkit" which may be used in development projects to prevent and mitigate the impact of such projects on the transmission of STDs and HIV. Traditional Healers as supervisors of directly observed therapy for tuberculosis - an intervention study. R720 000. A World Health Organisation funded study that was based in rural KwaZulu Natal.

Determining the prevalence of anti-tat antibodies in HIV infected South Africans and establishing a consensus sequence of the tat portion of the locally circulating HIV genome. R450 000. This is a collaborative study with Dr Barbara Ensoli, Laboratory of Virology, Istituto Superiore di Sanita, Rome. The study is aimed at collecting baseline data in preparation for developing a candidate HIV vaccine.

Improving STD management in the Durban Metro. R450 000. A randomized, controlled STI trial involving nurse training and the introduction of "syndromic packets" being implemented in the Durban Metro. World AIDS Foundation / FHI Grant

This is DFID's largest project in Africa and is a 4 year programme to provide over R300 million in technical assistance to the Dept of Health and other partners.
